Fun Facts About Scrapping

Talk to most scrappers, some might call what they do as fun, bust most just call it work. One thing everyone can agree on, and assuming that most people who read this are in the scrap business in the first place, there are some fun facts about scrapping most other people do not know, like-The first real recycling program was introduced in New York City in the 1890s. The city’s first recycling plant was built in 1898.  Most people would be shocked scrap metal recycling has been around that long at all. So here is a few facts that might be interesting.

By 1924, 83% of American cities were separating some trash items to be reused.

The average dump consist of about 10% metal products that have been discarded.

During the time it takes you to read this sentence, 50,000 12-ounce aluminum cans are made.

At one time, aluminum was more valuable than gold- in the 1850s, aluminium was more valuable than gold – aluminium was priced at $1,200 per kg and gold at about half of that, $664 per kg.

More than 20,000,000 Hershey’s Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.

Aluminum can take up to 500 years to break down. However, they can be recycled forever. You can recycle aluminium over and over again, and there is no limit to it.

Over 60% of all cans in a supermarket are made of steel.
